G6PD – Medications that trigger haemolysis

Individuals with G6PD deficiency have to be cautious with certain medications, as they can induce oxidative stress in red blood cells, triggering hemolysis. Here’s a short list of some commonly used medications that can precipitate hemolytic events in G6PD-deficient individuals:

  • Primaquine (an antimalarial)
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Nitrofurantoin
  • Trimethoprim
  • Sulfonylureas (e.g gliclazide)
  • Sulfasalazine and other sulphonamide drugs
